An SC/ST court on Thursday acquitted three accused in the Hathras rape and murder case and found another guilty. Of the four accused — Sandeep (20), Ravi (35), Luv Kush (23) and Ramu (26) — the court found Sandeep guilty of the crime.
In September 2020, a 19-year-old Dalat woman was raped and critically injured in Boolgarh in Hathras district of western Uttar Pradesh. Four upper caste Thakurs from the same village were accused in the case. She succumbed to her injuries 15 days later while undergoing treatment at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.
The girl's family said they were not satisfied with the court's verdict and said they would appeal the case to the High Court.
The rape case sparked massive outrage, with protests and calls for justice. The controversy also took a political turn after authorities removed the woman's body from the hospital without the family's permission. They also did not allow her family to perform her last rites and performed them in the middle of the night.
